In the age of instant messaging and emails, handwritten letters seem almost forgotten. But a quiet revival is underway, and it’s bringing a lot of joy to those who participate.
In Bengaluru, a small initiative called “Letters of Light” encourages people to write anonymous, handwritten letters to strangers in need of encouragement. Volunteers distribute these notes to hospitals, elderly homes, and orphanages. The words are simple but powerful: “You matter.” “You are stronger than you think.” “The world is better with you in it.”
Recipients often keep the letters tucked in their diaries or wallets for years. “It felt like someone knew exactly what I needed to hear,” says Rani, a nurse who received a note during a tough week.
Writing by hand slows us down and allows deeper reflection. For both the writer and reader, it fosters connection, humanity, and warmth—things we often miss in our fast-paced digital lives.
